I went to spend a weekend in Bridlington in the north of England (East Yorkshire). It is not very far from Hull and York and has over 35,000 inhabitants, which is more than 100 times more than the last city I stayed in the North (West Burton, North Yorkshire). Moreover, there are many tourists so this increases the number of people who are in this small coastal town. My goal, again, was to find opportunities to chat with the locals and practice my English with English people.


My journey in train to Bridlington was already quite hectic as the train passed through Doncaster just when there was a huge fire in the countryside. The train passed right by this fire, which caused a bit of excitement in the train. The large black smoke was visible at several kilometres away.

When I arrived in Bridlington, I went to the guest house in which I had booked a room. The guest house was actually more like a B&B (Bed and Breakfast). My arrival in the house has already allowed me to chat with a local. The keeper of the house explained to me how everything works in the house, asked me to order my breakfast for the next day, and I even managed to make a few jokes that made her laugh, so it started well.

In the hotel, I quickly understood what the main activity of the area was:


Then, after leaving my belongings in the room, in which I was not surprised to see that the tea provided was "Yorkshire Tea", I immediately left the house to go for a walk in town and find a place for dinner. It was almost dark and I found it was very cold. It must have been due to the fact that the city was close to the sea. Over there, the seagulls lay down the law and are quite voracious. They are everywhere and it is very noisy because of their cry, even at night. They are very numerous and the pigeons are largely in the minority. Sometimes a brave pigeon lands in the middle of the seagulls, but it is quickly cleared by the seagull mafia. They are more violent than the crows in big European cities and do not hesitate to attack passers-by too. I understand why there were a lot of signs saying that it was forbidden to feed the seagulls...


I was surprised to see that there were a lot of people on the streets during the night. Lots of pubs were open and there were even arcades and shops with sea and boat theme. However, it was difficult to find a restaurant still open. When I finally found one, I went in and asked if it was possible to order a meal. They told me that they do not serve after 9:30. It was 9:34 p.m. I left the place without eating but at least I had a first contact with the locals in the street.

I finally went to a supermarket that was still open and bought a sandwich. I ended up eating it on a bench in front of the sea, which was not so bad after all. Then I went back to the hotel.




On the second day, after having my “English breakfast” at the hotel, I went to town, to the seaside. It looked different from the one I saw at night, and it was very hot. I did some activities while trying to chat with people each time. I quickly noticed that Bridlington was a large port with a quick access to the sea.







Apparently, Bridlington is known to be one of the biggest shell fishing ports in Europe. This seems to be the pride of the town's fishermen. But also an ideal place for sailing.
